Pioneering EUV technology for the latest generation of chips

Our technical expertise and creative spirit have helped us to develop high-quality opto-mechanical solutions for more than a century – solutions for global brands in diverse markets. We work together to develop technology that helps drive the world forwards. For instance, we are involved in the development and production of critical, pioneering parts for machines that produce and inspect semiconductor chips.

For one of our clients, we developed and produced the Beam Delivery System (BDS). A revolutionary system!

The Beam Delivery System is the core of the high-brightness Extreme Ultra Violet (EUV) light source that facilitates mask inspection for EUV lithography. It is required for the mass production process for the next generation of semiconductors. The BDS ensures that different, independent laser beams are accurately focused at the same location. The powerful laser beams then evaporate tin plasma at the location. The evaporation process produces EUV light, which is used for mask inspection.

It is in part thanks to this system that semiconductor chips are becoming smaller, cheaper, and smarter, and in turn, so are devices that you use every day, such as your smartphone.

The latest generation of EUV chip

Major global players expect a lot from this new generation of chips machines – that work with EUV (Extreme Ultraviolet Light) technology and make increasingly smaller semiconductors possible. To be able to work with EUV light, the optical part is located within a vacuum, whereby the light is conducted by means of mirrors, rather than lenses.

The opportunities offered by this technology are vast and will allow us to develop even better and more efficient chips in the future.

How it’s made

The video below shows you how the Beam Delivery System is produced. Nedinsco is responsible for the concept, all the way through to qualification. It all starts with our Design and Development department. It’s here that the client’s ideas and requirements are translated into a concept. By using the latest techniques and tools, we are able to develop high-quality, high-tech products, which are then fully produced in our own machine factory, clean room, and assembly departments.

Nedinsco collaborating on pioneering laser-communication technology

The need for rapid, secure data transmission continues apace and is likely to be in increasing demand for years to come.

The number of systems that need to exchange data between one another is growing, and with that, the quantity of data.

Major online streaming services have recently been asked to reduce the quality of their services to free up more bandwidth for other types of communication.
Much of this communication is via satellites, utilizing Radio Frequency Technology. To help meet increasing demand, Nedinsco is working on a new technology that will help to expand the existing infrastructure. The new technology utilizes laser light instead of radio frequencies. Since 2014, Nedinsco has been working with TNO to develop this pioneering laser technology for the aerospace industry.
Using lasers is very advantageous because of their greater efficiency, speed, and safety. This technology also offers a solution for the use of quantum key distribution.

The Netherlands has a lengthy history in high-end opto-mechatronic series production. Series production of high-quality opto-mechanical systems for the space industry is new.
To service the global market with this specific expertise, Nedinsco has formed a consortium with VDL ETG, DEMCOM, Hyperion, and TNO under the name ‘FSO Instruments’. FSO Instruments is the laser communication equipment provider.

Coronavirus COVID-19

We have, over recent days, received an increasing number of queries concerning the potential impacts of coronavirus on the production and delivery of our products.

Nedinsco is currently producing and delivering  as agreed, we have sufficient raw materials and workforce available to work on your orders.

We have of course made some adjustments on the shop floor in order to safeguard the health and welfare of our employees.

We are working strictly to the regulations imposed by the National Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) and have formulated a protocol incorporating rules for employees and visitors. We thank you for understanding that we are currently unable to accept any visitors and we are paying even closer attention to the hygiene of our employees, many of whom are working from home where possible. Our protocol aims to protect all Nedinsco employees to the fullest extent possible.

How the situation is likely to evolve in the Netherlands and across Europe over the coming days is uncertain. In the event that the present situation does change, we shall of course let you know. Our colleagues in the Sales department are on hand should you have any questions:

High Tech NL visites Nedinsco

Collaboration and innovation are at the basis of every success. It is important to continue to develop as a high-tech company. That is why Nedinsco believes that continuous innovation and collaboration between and with high-tech companies and knowledge institutions are extremely important. Approximately 195 organizations are united in High Tech NL; from small to large companies and knowledge institutions. To strengthen the network, High Tech NL works closely with more than 40 other networks, development companies, interest groups and clusters in the Netherlands and abroad.

Cooperation between TNO and Nedinsco results in a high-quality optical module for the space industry

TNO is the largest research institute in the Netherlands. They connect people and knowledge to create innovations that strengthen the competitiveness of companies and the welfare of society for the long term.
They do this together with the crème de la crème of the Dutch high-tech companies.

Here at Nedinsco, we are currently working with TNO on the development of pioneering technology for the space industry. Communications between satellites and the Earth currently take place using radio frequency. Nedinsco and TNO are jointly developing a new technology for communications between satellites and the Earth: laser communications.

Laser communication technology offer a number of advantages:

  • Laser communication is faster than communications using radio frequency;
  • Laser communication is safer, and improved safety is urgently needed.


Development of optical modules

Laser communication is possible thanks to a lightweight optical module. Ultimately, the lightweight optical module will be mounted on a satellite and launched into space. It will pick up all the laser signals sent up there and convert them into data. This optical module makes safer and faster laser communications possible between satellites and the Earth.

Nedinsco is responsible for the design, development, and actual production of the lightweight optical modules, including the assembly of the optical elements and the extensive testing of the modules. Environmental requirements, risk minimization, and tolerance analysis are central aspects of the testing process.

The OTUS is a Military Off The Shelf (MOTS) full-HD, colour camera. The OTUS has been developed to ensure that drivers of military vehicles can safely navigate and manoeuvre both during the day and at night in poor-visibility conditions without the use of lighting equipment on vehicles, supplementary infra-red lighting, or lasers. The wide, full-HD field of view gives a detailed image of the road ahead, as well as either side of the road.

A sustainable future

We do this with state-of-the-art equipment for all processes. All operations are carried out on machines that are capable of ensuring the smallest possible tolerances – both for mechanical operations and surface treatments. If a new innovation becomes available, Nedinsco has the capability to implement it immediately. Nedinsco is also focused on environmentally-conscious production, and we strive to conserve energy, reduce waste, and recycle residual materials across all of our processes. In our daily operations, we ensure that nothing that we do is unnecessarily harmful to the environment, either directly or directly, allowing us to create an environmentally conscious working environment in which we can continue to introduce improvements, where possible.

New sustainable wash unit, RO unit, and electrical boiler

Nedinsco has introduced a number of new environmentally-conscious changes in 2019, including the acquisition of a bespoke wash unit. The wash unit is equipped with a high-pressure cleaner and 3000-litre storage tank.

We have also acquired a new RO unit for the production of demineralized water for use in the galvanizing workshop and production. This will eliminate the need for water purification, significantly reducing the number of chemicals used. This RO unit is also more economical than its predecessor.

Finally, we have also purchased new electrical boilers to heat the paint shop. In the future, these new electrical boilers will also allow us to heat the baths in the galvanizing workshop. The new boilers consume no gas whatsoever, helping us to reduce our CO2 emissions.

These developments and our continuous pursuit of environmentally-conscious operations will allow us to make ongoing improvements to our high-tech products and ensure that we continue to produce with the environment in mind.
